Lightroom:  DNG-What’s new, JPG vs. RAW

EXTRA EXTRA! JPEG is dead! JPEG’s main advantage was size and compression to save storage space. Well with a new Adobe Lightroom 4 tool, this issue is next to non existent, so long as you can afford the memory card space. This week Kevin Kubota talks about the new DNG Lossy compression format. Imagine the space saving size of a JPEG with the image information of a RAW file. Also, Kevin shows us how to go back in time and change the past for the better, by recovering blown out highlights and muddy shadows.

Kevin's Homework for this week: Pull up an old RAW image and reprocess it using your newly learned techniques!

Adobe Lightroom 4 has pulled out all stops with Lightroom 4 and unleashed a whole bundle of new features. We want to see how you use these new goodies to your advantage. Reprocess an older RAW image and show it side by side with a pre-Lightroom 4 process. Then submit it in our Homework tab to see how you and others are benefiting from the new tools!

I love that I can save in lossy DNG with basically the same amount of information as a RAW with the save of a JPG. Game changer for sure!

Ok. It looks like I will not be watching PhotoPro this season, unless Kevin gets off Lightroom.
Maybe next season he will just keep it general. There are lots of common denominators amongst the different software out there.
As you guessed it, I am not a Lightroom user.
But, the rest of the shows are great, so far.

Hey Porfirio….Kevin will most definitely be doing more than just lightroom. He’s got marketing, lighting, business advice and more coming soon. Hang in there :)

    Thank you Melissa,
I am sorry for being so impatient. I will tune in, for sure.
The whole Network thing is such a good idea.
    Enjoying it a lot!

Hi Porfirio, yup, as Melissa said, we are trying to mix it up this season. Lightroom is always a hot topic and I get so many requests to teach more about it, so we wanted to keep some of that this season. From here on out, though, I will be covering a variety of other topics. It’s tough to please everyone, but we sure try :-)

What happens to my file if I shoot my Nikon D4 with lossy compression and then convert that same file to dng with lossy compression? Am I hurting the file?
    Thanks so much.
