New Episodes On Wednesday!
Join Joel Grimes as he teaches a weekly workshop on how he captures his most powerful images.
Special FX- High Speed Action
Freezing an athlete mid-action can be a lot pretty hard. As Joel discovered when doing some of his first full movement action shots, anything below 1/5000th of a second was leaving ghosting on the image and just wasn’t as sharp as it could be. So in order to avoid that, he shoots with a thyristor flash head. This faster burst of light freezes the image as if they were never moving at all.
This week Joel brings James Townsend back into the studio to freeze some Mixed Martial Arts for your visual pleasure. The results, even straight out of the camera are nothing short of impressive. Check out this weeks LitUp and be amazed by what you see.

Actually, sport photography is one thing I’m pretty good at. Would love to submit one of my shots to Joel and see what he thinks.

Awesome vid. But I have a question, why not use the high-speed sync feature of the 5D2? That way it isn’t limited to 1/200… There’s probably a good reason not to, but I don’t know it.
